The first European Indoor Athletics Championships was held in Vienna in 1970. At the same time, at all European championships competitions were organized in both categories. They were annual events until 1990. After that they became biennial events.

This year the European Indoor Athletics Championships is organized in Prague. In 2017, it will be held in the capital of Serbia, Belgrade.

For Serbia, that will be the first indoor athletics event to be organized in Belgrade. The biggest athletics event until 2017 was SPAR European Cross Country Championships organized in 2013.

Belgrade has become a city of culture, inspiration, sport and musical festivals. It is changing and developing fast, at the same time preserving its rich and varied history, combined with unique mixture of culture, architecture and urban vibe. We have a great many talented athletes, such as Novak Djokovic (tennis), Ivana Spanovic (athletics), Asmir Kolasinac (athletics), Emir Bekric (athletics), Nemanja Vidic (football), Ana Ivanovic (tennis), Jelena Jankovic (tennis), Milorad Cavic (swimming) and others.

The Championships will be held in Kombank Arena, well-known to sports fans and music lovers.

Kombank Arena is the state-of-the-art, multipurpose hall able to accommodate public attending sports, cultural and musical events, fairs and exhibitions. It is a venue equipped with the up-to-date universal technology and sophisticated marketing, exquisite comfort with comprehensive facilities for viewers and visitors.

The Arena houses between 600 000 and 800 000 visitors annually. It consists of the great hall,  the small hall and the parking lot. It has 18 386 chairs, 720 of them are upholstered. When the athletic track is installed, its capacity will be 10 000 seats.
